MTSM #1 in NJ for Undergraduate Entrepreneurship, #34 in US

The Princeton Review has informed us that NJIT’s national ranking has improved from #43 to #34. Such a significant improvement is unprecedented, especially given that this year a more stringent criteria of what constitutes an entrepreneurship course at NJIT.

It will also be the third year in a row that MTSM makes the top 50 list. Moreover, for the first time, the Princeton Review will also announce four regional rankings of entrepreneurship programs; we will appear as #7 in the Northeast region, which extends to Washington DC and includes MIT, Harvard, Babson, and George Washington University.

An entrepreneurship program KPI that jumped significantly in 2021 is student + recent grads awards (up by $1M), because one of our students won his first SBIR Phase II. MTSM has received multiple teaching and publication awards for incorporating the SBIR program in its entrepreneurship curriculum, and it is good to see the impact of such efforts. MTSM also teaches ventures in the NJITHAN and VentureLink portfolios on how to secure SBIR funding. I am hopeful that this curriculum will help maintain the MTSM and NJIT lead among institutions for entrepreneurship education and practice.

Everyone at MTSM needs to take ownership in the rankings that were six years in the making. MTSM got on the list for the first time in 2019 when CUE made changes to the I&E concentration. We more or less held our spot in 2020. In 2021, students who graduated from our program started winning serious investments, (can we list a couple of examples?) driven primarily by Somers E’s I-Corps program but also by specialized finance courses (ENTR320, ENTR330); this lagging indicator of program effectiveness jumped and thus so has our ranking.
